I'm new to Boise and have never river fished, any suggestions that might help me fish the Boise river without getting snagged ever couple of seconds? I have pretty light gear so I'll probably just be going for rainbows and other similarly sized fish.
What's a good bait to use? How do you rig your line? What Good places do you recommend close into Boise, or places that are good to fish that are outside boise?
Trout love worms. I always have some worms with me when I go fishing. I also try flies.
You should be able to river fish with light gear without a problem. I use 8 lb test with a swivel. I then place a pre-tied hook on the swivel. Look for hooks with a smaller test than what you are using on your pole. If the hook's line is 8lb test then you should use 10lb test on your pole. That way if you get a snag you have a good chance of breking the leader rather than your main line. That will help you to not tie as many swivels on.
When I river fish with medium to high current, I will cast straight out in the river (never upstream) to prevent snags. I then real in slowly to keep the line moving and off the very bottom.
You could try fishing the Payette river above Horseshoe Bend or even above Banks, it is easy to get to and is relativly close. The upper portions of the Boise river are nice fishing, but they are hard to get to and do not allow the use of worm/bait. Not generally some where I'd send a begginner, but when you get better you could give them a try.
